The Exit Wounds Collaborative Art Project at Homeboy Industries is an ongoing relational project which blends collaged individual narratives created by formerly gang-involved youth with my Bullet Blossoms series. Participants tell their stories through their own photographs, original art, text and unconventional objects. Then, with direction from the participants about where to aim, I shoot and paint poppy blossoms around the "exit wounds" to suggest healing & hope co-existing with violence and despair. Twelve original works from the project were on view at the Hi-Lite Project Space from March 19 - April 14, 2011. All proceeds benefitted Homeboy Industries.
Exit Wounds continues in 2012 to include a large scale collaborative mural project in Boyle Heights.
Selected works are also on exhibit throughout Los Angeles as part of the Craft and Folk Art Museum’s Folk Art Everywhere program.
